So what does a typical conversion consist of? At Throttle-Up, we take the time to work with you to decide what you're looking for out of your locomotive conversion and the best way to give you what you want. Exactly what we'll do depends on what you want for your locomotive, but generally speaking the conversion process consists of four steps. First, for a battery only installation, we remove all the power pick-ups, on both the wheels and the shoes, if so equipped. Or, if it is going to be powered by both track and battery, we isolate the track pick-ups and add a track/battery selector switch. Next we remove the stock electronic board; this is replaced with either a QSI or Air Wire decoder. The locomotive is then rewired with larger gauge wire suitable for the larger current demands of the batteries. The last step is the installation of the batteries. |

One of the many things that sets our conversions apart from the competition is the work we do with batteries. Instead of buying pre-made battery packs, we custom build the battery pack to fit the locomotive. In most cases the batteries are installed inside the boiler for steam locomotives and in the body of diesel locomotives and/or their gas tanks. By custom building the battery packs to fit the locomotive we can maximize the battery size and capacity. This eliminates the need for battery cars or tenders with heavy batteries that then have to be dragged behind the locomotive reducing its pulling power. We put the battery weight over the drive wheels were it benefits the locomotive's tractive effort. |
